What is Ganesh Chaturthi? Why we celebrate Ganesh Chaturthi?
We celebrate this 10-day-long Ganesh Chaturthi festival every year. But how many of us actually know the reason behind the celebration of Ganesh Chaturthi.
Ganesh Chaturthi is a 10-day-long Hindu festival which is celebrated in honour of elephant-headed god Ganesha’s birthday. He is the son of Lord Shiva and Goddess Parvati.
There are more than 108 names of Lord Ganesha and he is the lord of arts and science and the deva of wisdom. Lord Ganesha is honoured at the start of rituals and ceremonies as he’s considered as the god of beginnings.
There are two different stories of Ganesha’s birth. First one is that goddess Parvati created Lord Ganesha out of her body’s dirt while bathing and set him to guard her door while she finishes her bath. Shiva who has gone out returned home, but Ganesha didn’t know him, stopped him from entering and angry shiva severed his head after a fight between the two. When Parvati get to know about this, she got enraged and then lord shiva promised her that Ganesha will live again. Shiva sends all the devas in search of a head facing north of a dead person could only manage the head of an elephant. Shiva fixed the head on the Ganesha and brought him back to life.
The second story is that Ganesha was created by Lord Shiva and Goddess Parvati on the request of the devas to be a Vighnaharta (obstacle-creator) in th path of rakshasas (demons) and to help the devas.
